Sports Weekly:December 23, 2006

Well its official Bowl Season has kicked off.So far we've had 6 games with 4 of them being absolute blow outs with 2 close games so far the Bowl Game of the Year Winner is New Mexico/San Jose State so maybe we'll get better games as the Bowl Season goes on.I blame the Bowl Selection Committee for the 4 squashes so far(TCU and Northern Illinois was somewhat of a mismatch.).But overall I have to admit I have enjoyed watching the games mainly because it gave me opportunities to see teams I haven't seen play all year(TCU,BYU,Troy,Rice,East Carolina,San Jose State,New Mexico,Utah, and Tulsa).Out of those teams I am most impressed with BYU and TCU the two best Mountain West teams.Despite being in the same conference and playing against each other already this year(BYU won 31-17 back in September)I would've love to see these two play each other instead on a neutral field.

Another positive about the bowl games so far is that I am off to a 6-0 start in predictions(beating out my 4-0 start last year as my best start ever).I am hoping to become 32-0 by the time the Bowl season is over. However,I have yet to pick the Florida/Ohio State game so like I said last week it may not be until 7:59pm Monday January 8th that I make my pick. The NFL this week was pretty meh-ish with the highlights featuring the Redskins upset the Saints and the Titans winning their 5th straight after starting 2-7.In the NBA,Gilbert Arenas dropped 60 on my Lakers while wearing the ugliest jerseys worn this year until I saw Oregon's weird looking rotten cheese colored gold helmets and stupid looking green jerseys on Thursday, and finally in the world of College Basketball we had Oklahoma State beat Pitt 95-89 in Double OT and Tennessee beat Texas 111-105 in OT along with my Terrapins pulling off a not quite impressive 66-54 win over American.

With that here is my Weekly Awards:
College Basketball Game of the Week:#14 Oklahoma State vs #7 Pitt from Thursday night(Ok State won 95-89)
NBA Game of the Week:Washington Wizards vs Phoenix Suns from Friday Night(Wiz snaps the Suns win streak 144-139 in OT)
College Football Game of the Week:San Jose State vs New Mexico(the closest game so far with San Jose State winning 20-12)
NFL Game of the Week:Washington Redskins vs New Orleans Saints(Skins upset Saints 16-10)
Best Team of the Week:The Washington Wizards(for ending the Suns 15 game win streak)
Worst Team of the Week:The Oakland Raiders(for not scoring a TD against the Cheifs NOR the Rams, who despite being my team has the Worst Defense I've ever seen)
MVP of the Week:Gilbert Arenas(for dropping 60 against the Lakers and 54 against the Suns)
Worst Game of the Week:Minnesota Vikings vs Green Bay Packers from Thursday
Game of the Week:Washington Wizards vs Phoenix Suns from Friday

Alright now its time for the Recommended Games of the Week:

Sean Lennon on Late Night with Conan O'Brien

I've been a fan of the show since the Summertime and I usually don't know who appears on it until I watch the episode. So yesterday I watched one of the episodes and found out that Sean Lennon was performing. The only time I had ever seen Sean prior to this episode was in an interview in the movie "Imagine:John Lennon".It was kind of awkward though because I thought he was female when I first saw him(then again it was 1 in the morning and going by the way he talked made him sound female but this is a different story). On Conan he played his song,"Friendly Fire" from the album by the same name(his first album released in 8 years). Its a pretty good song thats somewhat of a throwback to songs in the Late 60's-early 70's.

The only thing I don't like about it is his singing voice(which is ironic because its probably the only voice that could work with the song and guitar play of it,which is a positive about the song). After the performance Conan interviewed him where they talked about the making of the album and about Yoko Ono's appearence on Late Night a while back.In case anyones wondering Sean is currently 31 years old and I don't think will ever get close to stardom that John recieved so I wouldn't call him a failure because it would be nearly impossible to fill John's shoes.

But anyways if you add him on your friends list here is a link to his myspace.

Here is also as a bonus the music video for the song,"Friendly Fire"

Lamar Hunt

For some of you who may or may not know,Lamar Hunt, owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Father of the AFL died on Thursday at the age of 74.For those who don't know Hunt,he was the man who challenged the NFL in 1959 when he created the AFL.It all began when Lamar Hunt was denied by the NFL to create a franchise in Dallas(Note:This was before the Dallas Cowboys). In response he formed his own Football league,The AFL.The AFL began play in 1960 with 8 teams:The Boston(New England)Patriots,Buffalo Bills,Houston Oilers(Tennessee Titans),New York Titans(Jets),Dallas Texans,Denver Broncos,Los Angeles(San Diego)Chargers, and the Oakland Raiders.

When the AFL began their had been already been 4 leagues to challenge the NFL(3 of them being called the AFL,and the All-American Football Conference who despite having 2 teams survive to this day in the NFL(Cleveland and San Francisco) didn't exactly make an Impact on the league). At first the league was in trouble with low attendence and being cited as "NFL Rejects".The Houston Oilers captured the 1960 and 61 AFL Championships, but success came for Hunt when the Dallas Texans dethroned them to win the 1962 Championship,20-17 in 2 OTs.In the offseason...facing pressure from the Dallas Cowboys(who had been formed AFTER the AFL's announcement),the Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs. The AFL rose to heights when it set a single-game attendence record on November 8,1964 when the Jets faced the Bills in Shea Stadium.

In 1966 the rivalry between the two leagues reached its peak when both leagues merged. With that merger both leagues scheduled a AFL-NFL Championship game on January 15,1967.It was Lamar Hunt who coined the name "Superbowl" when his daughter was talking about a new toy she had gotten called "The Super Ball".However the way she said it made it sound like Superbowl. However,it wasn't until around Superbowl IV that it was called, "The Superbowl".

In 1970 the AFL was officially dissolved into the NFL and the modern day era began. The NFL began to adopt old AFL ideas afterwards with the additions of names on players jerseys, revenue sharing of gate and television, the 2-point conversion, and the field time on the scoreboard.Along with the AFL and the Kansas City Chiefs,Lamar Hunt also created the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League(who folded in 1981),the Columbus Crew, the Kansas City Wizards, and FC Dallas. All teams played in Major League Soccer. He also founded the NASL and MLS.On December 13,2006,Lamar Hunt died of prostate cancer.

He will always be remembered as a father, owner, and the man who changed the NFL.The news came as shock to me and the Kansas City Chiefs organization,as he was the only owner in Chiefs history prior to his death.

RIP Lamar Hunt 1932-2006

2006-2007 College Bowl Game Predictions

Every year since 2003 I've been predicting EVERY Bowl Game in College Football even small time games.Overall my record is 43-42 in predictions. So without further ado here is my Bowl

Predictions

GMAC:Ohio over Southern MissInternational:Cincinnati over Western MichiganSugar:LSU over Notre DameOrange:Louisville over Wake ForestFiesta:Oklahoma over Boise StateRose:USC over MichiganCapitol One:Arkansas over WisconsinGator:West Virginia over Georgia TechCotton:Auburn over NebraskaOutback:Tennessee over Penn StateMPC Computers:Miami over NevadaChick-fil-A:Virginia Tech over GeorgiaAlamo:Texas over IowaMeineke Car Care:Boston College over NavyChamp Sports:Maryland over PurdueInsight:Texas Tech over MinnesotaLiberty:Houston over South CarolinaSun:Oregon State over MissouriMusic City:Clemson over KentuckyTexas:Rutgers over Kansas StateHoliday:California over Texas A&MIndependence:Oklahoma State over AlabamaEmerald:UCLA over Florida StateMotor City:Central Michigan over Middle TennesseeHawaii:Hawaii over Arizona StateArmed Forces:Utah over TulsaNew Mexico:San Jose State over New MexicoPapajohns.com:South Florida over East CarolinaNew Orleans:Troy over RiceLas Vegas:BYU over OregonPoinsettia:TCU over Northern Illinois

You probably notice that one game is missing....The National Championship and that is because I have yet to decide who I believe will win that game. While College Football experts are predicting Ohio State to take the title for the 2nd time in 5 years I am currently thinking about it.I have seen both teams play and I feel that despite Florida having close games against the likes of Tennessee(Won 21-20),Georgia(Won 21-14),Vanderbilt(Won 25-19),South Carolina(Won 17-16),and Florida State(Won 21-14).The total records for ALL 5 teams is 34-28.Four of those games however were on the road(Tennessee,Georgia,Vandy, and FSU).While 4 of those teams are playing in bowls(Tennessee,Georgia,South Carolina, and FSU).

I've seen Ohio State however blowing out the likes of Northern Illinois(35-12),Texas(24-7),Cincinnati(37-7),Penn State(28-6),Iowa(38-17),Bowling Green(35-7),Michigan State(38-7),Indiana(44-3),and Northwestern(54-10).While there only close games were against Illinois in Champaign(17-10) and Michigan in Columbus(42-39).The same Michigan team considered to be the No.2 team in the country by most sports writers/analysists.However,I've seen teams blow out other teams like Ohio State has this season and NOT win the championship and one of those teams was the 1983 Nebraska Cornhusker team who outscored there opponetts 604-186 coming into the 1984 Orange Bowl against Miami.Miami, meanwhile had been blown out 28-3 against Florida in the 1st game of the year.

Then Miami went on the next 3 games outscoring their opponets(Houston,Purdue, and Notre Dame)84-7.Then they blew out Duke,Louisville, and Mississippi State 129-38 total. However 3 out of their last 4 coming into the Orange Bowl game were fairly close games(17-7 against Cincinnati,12-7 against East Carolina, and 17-16 against Florida State)all 3 teams were unranked against Miami so it didn't look good coming into the January 2nd game in the Orange Bowl. However at the end Miami pulled off the victory and the upset. So now we're looking into a simular scenario here with a team that everyone is saying shouldn't be in the game(Florida) against a dominant unbeaten team(Ohio State).

So overall I am currently undecided on who to pick so expect my pick to happen sometime between Christmas and minutes before the championship game. Here is the schedule for the Bowls.

College Football Bowl Schedule

Another note for College Football,in the world of Division 1,Appalachian State defeated Massachusetts 28-17.Tomorrow Grand Valley State plays Northwest Missouri State for the Division II Championship at noon on ESPN2 while Mount Union faces Wisconsin-Whitewater for the Division III title at 4 on ESPN.

My Fellow Maryland Fans

On December 29th the Terps will be facing Purdue in the Champ Sports Bowl from Orlando.Personally I am surprised of how this season has gone down and no matter what happens(we damn well better win!)this season will never be forgotten by me.At the beginning of the season I was uncertain. We only beat William and Mary by 13 and just got through Middle Tennessee State(Who then turned around and lost 59-0 to Oklahoma). Then we got killed in Morgantown 45-24(more about WVU and their fans later).During the trip to Florida I watched the Florida International game on some local channel down there and I was just stunned about how bad we performed.I mean this is the 0-12 Florida International Team we're talking about and we only won 14-10.

It was at that moment I believed that we were going to get killed in the ACC.On the night BHS's Homecoming we played Georgia Tech I didn't give us a chance until I saw the score during another game I was watching.Since it wasn't on TV I had to follow it via ESPN's realtime sports player.I watched stunned as we led 23-14 only to lose 27-23.I was upset but gained SOME confidence in the team. The next week they played Virginia in Charlottesville and out of nowhere rallied from being down 20-0 to win 28-26 in what was the beginning of the "Greatest 5 Weeks in Maryland Football History" as I call it.

At Maryland's homecoming we faced NC State and pulled off a 26-20 edge.At that moment I decided that I wanted to go to the FSU game.On October 28th at Byrd Stadium I witnessed as we defeated Florida State 27-24 courtesy of a blocked kick and I practically jumped out of my seat and onto the field with everyone celebrating with my fellow Maryland fans.We became Bowl Eligible but I couldn't see us getting to 7-2 but the next week the team stunned me again. We went to Clemson,South Carolina to play Clemson(duh!).

In what was a huge upset(I predicted Clemson to win the ACC)we beat em 13-12.The "5 Week Miracle" ended on November 11th with a 14-13 win over Miami.I thought we could've(and should've) won the ACC but we blew it,IMO.We got blown out 38-16 against BC then lost on Senior day to eventual ACC Champs,Wake Forest 38-24(Worst.Weekend.Ever).So now I'm concerned. Can we beat Purdue? Are we/were we for real?

I've seen Purdue play only twice(against Indiana and Notre Dame)they beat IU barely but lost to the Fighting Irish. As always I make my bowl picks and for this one I'm picking.......MARYLAND OVER PURDUE! I personally look forward to the game and hope we can win and keep the bowl win streak alive. As for WVU fans,I've had enough with you guys taking shots at Maryland.Yes,you did kick our ass at Morgantown but look at the keyword:MORGANTOWN.

Next year we play you guys in College Park and I know we won't be having our seniors and will have a new QB but I will look forward to the game because I'm sick of the Maryland bashing I've been getting and to put in how I feel about WVU I'm picking Georgia Tech to beat you guys in the Gator Bowl.

Now to change topics.Basketball season is here and frankly I'm happy about both Men's and Women's teams are doing so far.The Men's team lost to Notre Dame on Sunday but we rebounded tonight with an 79-59 win over Fordham and if we continue playing well than I can't wait until the February 11th game where we get Duke at the Comcast Center. As for the ladies team they're the No.1 team in Women's Basketball right now(9-0)they just beat Northern Iowa 77-33 and I look forward to the January 13th showdown against who else but Duke.

If anything that game is the rematch to look forward to in the ongoing Duke/Maryland basketball rivalry. The next Men's game for Maryland is Sunday at Boston College at 6:30 check your local listings or Comcast Sports Net.The next women's game is Sunday at Temple at 2pm it will most likely not air but check your local listings for channel. Finally, the Champ Sports Bowl will be on Friday,December 29th at 8pm on ESPN.I look forward to it

MARYLAND WINS! MARYLAND WINS! MARYLAND WINS!

That was what my friend sent me last night on IM.I was sitting here browsing several sites and all of a sudden my friend Steve sends me an IM saying what the title says. Now I stopped watching after Halftime, assuming it was over.I last watched it with 14 minutes to go and Duke up by 13.So I turn on ESPN and see them celebrating.I couldn't believe it I didn't think they could the comeback towards the end but they did it.Finally a championship has returned to Maryland I am proud to be writing this.Thank you Brenda Frese,Cristal Langhorne,Kristi Tolliver, and the entire team for restoring my faith in Maryland sports after both Football and Men's Basketball team did nothing at all in the past two years.
